Orff Schulwerk is a unique child-centered approach to teaching and learning music and movement based on the work of composer Carl Orff. Through speech, song, dance, and play, children are actively involved in making music using an array of melody and percussion instruments. Music and Movement Workshops for Teachers
INTRODUCTION TO ORFF SCHULWERK FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS
June 22-26, 2009
Daily 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Designed particularly for the elementary educator, the workshop is applicable for preschool, physical and special education and middle school teachers. Formal training in music is NOT a prerequisite for this workshop, however, undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 45 semester hours. Special sessions with experts on the child voice and early childhood music will augment instruction in basic Orff pedagogy. Two semester hours of credit are optional. Attendance is required for all coursework.
LEVEL 1 TEACHER TRAINING
MON. June 22- SAT. June 27 & MON. June 29- THURS. July 2, 2009

This approved certification course of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association is a 10-day full-time course. It is based on the work of the composer Carl Orff and his colleagues who developed "Orff Schulwerk," music and movement for the school. Participants will explore Orff process, melody and rhythm, improvisation, pentatonic scales and bordun accompaniments. Ability to read music notation is a prerequisite. Optional four semester hours of credit are available. Attendance is required for all coursework.
LEVEL II TEACHER TRAINING
MON. June 22- SAT. June 27 & MON. June 29- THURS. July 2, 2009
Daily 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
PLEASE NOTE: CLASS MEETS SAT. JUNE 27
This approved certification course of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association is a 10 day full-time course. Level II is for individuals who have successfully completed an AOSA approved Level I course. Instruction will review Level I techniques with further exploration in the following areas: mixed and uneven meters, harmonizations to include the moving bordun and chord change accompaniments, movement and instrumental improvisation, extended forms, and the continuation of the soprano recorder with the introduction of the alto recorder. Students will teach a short lesson demonstrating Orff process. Optional four semester hours of credit available. Certification requires attendance for all coursework.

Carolyn Bodily -an experienced classroom teacher and K-6 specialist; teaches Level I movement and applications for the academic classroom.

Judith Cole - Professor of music at A&M University-Kingsville, TX and past president of American Orff-Schulwerk Association; teaches Level II Orff Pedagogy, movement, folk dance.

Leslie Timmons - Associate Professor, Music Department, Utah State University; Course Director, teaches Level I Orff Pedagogy, recorder, folk dance.

Workshops are offered by the Music Department, Caine School of the Arts at Utah State University. All coursework takes place in FineArts Center.
